To save their music publishing firm from bankruptcy, Bll "Brains' Watson creates a colorful life-story about his partner, Danny Lee, representing him as a descendant of Louisiana's famous Josh Lee family and rightful poet laureate if Dixieland. Bill sells the movie rights to Apex Pictures for $100,000, and hires Dixie Hollister, a southern girl who has been singing in a new York nightclub, to help Danny acquire a Southern accent and manners. In New Orleans, Danny receives an honorary music degree, and soon finds himself in a romance with both Annabelle Hatcher and Barbara Ann Morgan, daughter of the South's most distinguished citizen, Colonel Morgan. But Danny has fallen in love with Dixie.
