A magical urban tale about a beautiful psychologist from San Francisco who decides to end a stalled romance with her long-time, high-profile, psychiatrist boyfriend/business partner. She moves on with her life by opening her own private practice in a vacant, street-front office space in the middle of a small commercial block located across the bay in Oakland, turning the predominately African-American and psychologically-ignored neighborhood on its emotional ear.

Release Info:

Release Date: March 17, 2023 (USA) | Length: 92 min | Genre: Comedy | MPAA Rating: Rated PG-13 for some suggestive material, language and brief violence, | Note(s): The movie, originally titled "Headshop" was scheduled for release in 2018. It was finally released in 2023 under the title above. I could not identify Candis Woods in the film, and I never actually saw Keith David, Jackée Harry, Joshua T. Shipman, or Candis Woods in the film. According to a story breakdown on CultureMix.com in a review by Carla Hay, they play the younger and older parents of Nicole Ari Parker's character, LaTrice.

"LaTrice spent some of her childhood in this Oakland neighborhood but moved away to Connecticut when she was about 9 or 10 years old, because her father got an executive job at an unnamed company. (In these childhood flashbacks, Jasmyn Renee Coleman plays a young Latrice; Candis Woods plays LaTrice’s mother; and Joshua Shipman plays LaTrice’s father.) LaTrice now wants to go back to her Oakland roots. But will she be welcome in this community?

LaTrice’s father became such a successful businessperson, she spent most of her life living with wealth. How rich is LaTrice’s father? When he finds out that LaTrice is moving her office, he offers to helicopter some cash over to her to help her get a new start with her business. LaTrice politely declines the offer. (Keith David and Jackée Harry have quick cameos as LaTrice’s present-day parents.)"
