- A film series is a collection of related films in succession that share the same fictional universe. Sometimes the work is conceived from the beginning as a multiple-film work, but in most cases the success of the original film (or an original series) inspires further films to be made.
- A film franchise is described a film series which not only continued the narrative through sequels and prequels, but also included expansion through ancillary intertexts which could include spinoffs, remakes and reboots. These formats did not have to exist as films either, and could be transmedial story telling, through other elements such as novels, video games and other works.
